What to Wear With High-Waisted Shorts

Styling High-Waisted Shorts

Partly thanks to retro-styled Mad Men series and similar shows, partly thanks to celebs appearing in vintage high-waisted shorts, this trend has slowly been making its way into mainstream fashion, and now it’s strong like never before. High-waisted shorts make a fun outfit option for all year round and help girls elongate their legs, as well as give them a little lift. Yet, if you’ve never rocked a high-waisted type of bottoms before and are unsure whether this trend is wearable for you, the answer is yes. You just need to be a little bit creative when styling mid-risers and get shorts that suit your body type so that they will be both comfortable and flattering.

The first thing to keep in mind is that "High Waisted" is relative. If you’re a kind of a short gal, go for styles that hit about 5 cm below your belly button. The bottoms that hit just below the midsection can make petites appear even shorter than they actually are. If you’re on a curvier side, opt for shorts with an A-line silhouette that can also make your legs longer visually, thus flattering your curves. A-line shorts have a narrower waist line and an elegant flare from your hips to the leg. Girls with larger busts are better to choose styles that are cut comfortably over the hip bones yet not all the way up to the waistline. For a more comfortable fit and casual styling, go with a size up, especially if the shorts are made of denim.

Another kick to come into the high-waist game is trying a variety of styles to find the best fit. When you’re in a jam, you can safely opt for a single-coloured outfit with shorts of different textures and prints. The monochromatic trend always looks sleek and polished. And to make it pop, you can add gingham or ruffles.

Denim High-Waisted Shorts

Jean shorts, on the other hand, is the classic that never goes out of style and suits just anyone. Denim comes back around each and every year and is the easiest thing to style. From edgy crop tops to formal elegant shirts, from puff-sleeves to a button-down, you can pair denim high-waisted shorts with absolutely any top to make your outfit look crisp and timeless.

Leather High-Waisted Shorts

Also, let's not forget about leather shorts which have returned as a major trend this year. A pair of high-waisted shorts made of leather or faux leather is extremely versatile and can be easily dressed up or down. For a casual look, wear them with a loose muscle tank or up the ante with a button-down shirt and a blazer thrown over it. To complete this super fancy outfit, add a pair of high heels.

Buttoned-Up High-Waisted Shorts

Buttoned-up top waisted shorts are also having a major moment right now. They are the new in-thing in the fashion that is seen all across Instagram feeds this season. To make them look even more prominent, wear them with a tucked-in top.

Bike-Up High-Waisted Shorts

Another 2020 staple is a pair of bike shorts. They happen to team well with every type of casual or athleisure tank or tee. However, if you’d like to make things less casual, you can make use of accessories. Add a fun fedora, hoop or a leather jacket to make this outfit “street-style ready”.

Oversized High-Waisted Shorts

If you prefer baggy, oversized pieces, you may like a “mom” short style. These shorts do your figure the most justice and are also very stylish right now. To balance them, you can try tighter shirts or crop tops. Or, why not team mom shorts with a "dad shirt" also known as a polo? To give this ensemble a bit more modern flair, experiment with vibrant colours and bold prints. That said, there's nothing wrong with choosing khaki hues and going full 1990s. Bermuda shorts, another baggy style, also offer you a great way to dive into the '90s fashion.

Printed High-Waisted Shorts

How awesome does Taylor Swift, the big fan of high-waisted bottoms, look in these stylish checkered shorts? Gingham, herringbone, and houndstooth high-waisted shorts flatter most body types and can be easily worn with a plain top for a balanced, chic look. To make it more polished, you can team checkered shorts with a collared shirt and a sweater over it.

Tops to Wear With High-Waisted Shorts

Every girl needs an easy, go-to everyday look, and we think high-waisted shorts paired with a tank or a simple t-shirt in solid colours fit the bill just right. If you are looking for shorts that would be easy to throw together with tops and shoes, consider versatile white shorts. Trainers, Converse, sandals, and mules… all options go well with them.

Once summer rolls around, skip a shirt and wear a crop top instead. This is a classic mix-and-match option for vacation or a city stroll that makes it easier to soak in that sun for a bronze glow. When running errands, you can break out your favourite accessories like a designer tote and slides or keep things casual like Taylor Swift. We love how she paired denim shorts with a denim cropped top and accessorised this ensemble with trainers, a backpack, and vintage round sunglasses for a basic but chic look.

Shirts to Wear With High-Waisted Shorts

For a Katharine Hepburn aesthetic, choose a button-down shirt. This is a perfect dressy casual option that can elevate your shorts and make your whole look office-preppy. Black strappy heels and designer earrings will give the ensemble a sophisticated and classy look appropriate for a date or night out. You can also take the look from work to happy hour by showing more skin. Simply leave a few top buttons unfastened.

We love the outfit of Kirsten Danst that embraces the more mature look in a satin button-down shirt tucked in. She chooses those sexy short-shorts that elongate her legs and pairs them with heels to feel extra elegant.

Jackets to Wear With High-Waisted Shorts

Wonder how to make your high-waisted shorts outfit date-night worthy? Try a classy blazer in nude or black with a sexy cropped top and high-waisted shorts that give more coverage to your legs. Stick to high-heel sandals and break out a cute tote of matching colour. This outfit will keep you comfy, stylish, and warm whether you're trying out a new restaurant after work or sharing a few drinks with your friends in a bar.

High-Waisted Shorts With Tights

For colder days, rock your shorts by wearing stockings or tights underneath. If you’d like to get a clean, polished look, go for black tights, black shorts, black sweater, and a leather jacket. To stand out from others, you can try coloured tights, a casual shirt, and trainers. You can also wear some high socks over the tights. Ultra stylish, ultra warm.

High-Waisted Shorts and Heels

It’s not a secret that high heels can help you achieve a dressier look and keep you from looking stumpy. Pair denim high-waisted shorts with high-heeled ankle-strap sandals for a night out or embrace silk shorts with heels for a summer wedding. Yet, if you feel uncomfortable with sky-high heels, opt for low-heeled mules and shorts in a neutral colour. Complete your look with a nice blouse and a blazer for an oh-so-chic look.

High-Waisted Shorts and Flats

As you already know, strappy sandals, trainers, and different types of heels are all great footwear choices to team with your high-waisted shorts. However, we also like the look of mid-risers styled with boots, which is an unexpected combination that will keep you warmer on cooler days. Priyanka Chopra looks glamorous wearing these in-trend shorts with knee-high boots and a tucked-in button-down jumper. She creates a streamlined silhouette and further emphasises her waist with a nice leather belt. For those cold autumn days when you’ve got some outdoor event, check out this look. Pop on a pair of sunglasses and chic blazer, and you’re ready to take on the day.

As you can see, everyone, from sophisticated women to celebrities, is wearing the high-waisted trend, so what are you waiting for? Rock these babies and let the whole world know how great you look!
